When my firstborn son was an older teenager, a young adult really, he went through a rebellious time. At a certain point, it seemed we just argued about everything he did. In frustration, I was pouring my heart out to the Lord one day when He stopped me in my tracks and instructed me to shut my mouth and love my son unconditionally. God said you have taught him. He knows how you feel about everything. He will not listen to your words at this moment. Just hush up and love him unconditionally. This was some of the best parenting advice I ever received with regard to my young adult children. I have learned I cannot be their Holy Spirit. Now twenty-five years later, the reward for heeding God’s advice has been healthy relationships with great communication with all my adult children.
