I buy inexpensive vintage ice cream dishes, pretty vintage plates, China cups/saucers, and so forth at thrift stores or garage sales for usually fifty cents or less. They are not sentimental to me, so I allow my children and now my grandchildren to have tea parties and treats out of them and if they get broken, it’s not a tragedy. This also teaches them to be careful of “special” fragile things. I make a big deal about giving them the “special dishes.” I tell them this is the kind I ate from as a child at my grandmother’s. With a little creativity and very little money, you can find little ways like this to turn the mundane into sweet memories for your child. It is all in the perspective of how you present things.
